**Local Development Depends on Stronger Communities and Infrastructure, Says Interior Minister**
Kellia, Cyprus – Interior Minister Constantinos Ioannou emphasized the importance of enhancing local development through improved infrastructure and strong community ties during his address at the annual dinner of the Kellia municipal district and AEK Kellia association on Friday night.
Ioannou highlighted that the ongoing local government reform, now two years into its implementation, is designed to empower local authorities and make them more effective in addressing the needs of their residents. He expressed the government's commitment to working closely with local authorities to ensure that the benefits of these reforms become increasingly evident in the daily lives of citizens.
"The essence of local development lies in continuous improvements to the lives of our people," Ioannou stated, underscoring the necessity of collaboration between central government and local entities. He noted that the reform aims to create stronger local authorities that are better equipped to respond to community needs.
In his remarks, Ioannou acknowledged Kellia's rich history and unique identity, particularly its role as a refuge for individuals displaced by the 1974 Turkish invasion. He pointed out that the community has welcomed refugees from 34 occupied villages, which has contributed to its diverse cultural landscape.
Moreover, the minister commended the local community for successfully preserving its traditional character while simultaneously adapting to modern challenges. He praised AEK Kellia for its significant contributions to the community, particularly through sports, cultural activities, and social initiatives that provide meaningful opportunities for the youth and foster social cohesion.
"The work done by AEK Kellia is vital for our community," Ioannou remarked, noting that such initiatives play a crucial role in strengthening the bonds among residents and enhancing the overall quality of life in Kellia.
The minister concluded his address by reiterating that the success of the local government reform hinges on cooperation, mutual understanding, and a shared vision among all stakeholders involved. He expressed confidence in the Aradippou municipality, where Kellia is situated, stating that it possesses the necessary conditions to leverage the opportunities presented by the new local government model for continued development.
