Russian forces struck Ukraine’s largest steel plant in Kryvyi Rih, President Volodymyr Zelenskiy’s home city, killing at least two people and injuring 14, Ukrainian officials said. ArcelorMittal Kryvyi Rih said the attack damaged key facilities used for power generation and blast furnace operations, partially halting production at the plant. “As a result of the attack, key production facilities in the power generation and blast furnace sectors have been damaged, and the plant’s production processes have been partially halted,” the company said on Telegram. Russia also targeted Kyiv early on Sunday, with missile strikes causing fires in at least two districts of the capital, Mayor Vitali Klitschko said. Three people were injured, according to the city’s military administration. Three more people, including a child, were injured in drone attacks elsewhere in the Kyiv region, regional governor Tymur Tkachenko said. Ukraine, meanwhile, launched a large-scale drone attack on Russia. Moscow’s Defence Ministry said its forces had shot down 822 Ukrainian drones across the country. Moscow region Governor Andrei Vorobyov said an 83-year-old man was killed in what he described as one of the largest Ukrainian drone attacks on the region since Russia launched its full-scale invasion in February 2022. Several people were injured in the Podolsk area, while a warehouse operated by Wildberries, Russia’s largest online retailer, was hit, Vorobyov said. Reuters video from the Wildberries warehouse in Koledino, around 45 km south of Moscow, showed a large plume of smoke rising from the site. Ukraine has targeted Wildberries in recent weeks, accusing the company of handling military goods as part of its broader campaign against Russian economic infrastructure linked to Moscow’s war effort. A drone strike on a bus near the southern Russian city of Belgorod also killed one person, the regional governor said. Ukraine’s military said it had struck a missile fuel production facility in Russia’s Rostov region. Moscow did not immediately comment on the claim. The attacks also spilled into NATO territory when a drone entered Romania from Moldova. Romania’s defence ministry said an F-18 fighter from a Spanish NATO air-policing contingent shot it down at 5.01am. Romanian authorities did not identify the drone’s origin, but a NATO spokesperson said it appeared to be Russian. Fragments of the destroyed drone appeared to have fallen in an uninhabited area between two villages, Romania’s defence ministry said. Russia did not immediately comment. It was the fourth incident this year in which a drone had strayed into Romanian territory. The latest escalation comes after Russia struck Ukraine’s largest grain-export port on the River Danube near the Romanian border last week. Ukraine has also stepped up attacks on Russian targets, including oil refineries, while both sides have struck commercial vessels in the Black Sea.
