Music Monday 24/8, Paphos District Archaeological Museum, 8pm. The concerts titled “Saxophone Festivities” are presented by the newly formed Cyprus Saxophone Orchestra of the Cyprus Saxophone Association, Saxophonia. The title draws on the work Festivities by Cypriot composer Alexandros Darna for saxophone orchestra. The two concerts feature original and arranged works by Cypriot, French, Cuban, American and Brazilian composers. The pieces showcase the dynamism and range of the twelve-member saxophone orchestra, which includes all six members of the saxophone family: sopranino, soprano, alto, tenor, baritone and bass saxophone. Performers include Christos Zenios (sopranino saxophone), Sylva Christodoulidou-Toumagian and Areti Myrali (soprano saxophone), Stella Arampatzoglou, Katerina Parpouna and Angelos Michael (alto saxophone), Theofilos Sotiriadis, Thomas Lumley and Christos Papadopoulos (tenor saxophone), Yiannis Myralis and Nikolas Georgiou (baritone saxophone), and Haris Ioannou (bass saxophone). Artistic direction: Yiannis Myralis. Tuesday 25/8, Protaras pedestrian street (Nausicaa Hotel), 8pm. Free admission. Visual arts Platres, Minerva Hotel. A specially designed installation for the historic Minerva Hotel continues in Platres, featuring new commissioned works from the Pylon Art & Culture organisation, presented by Christodoulos Panayiotou. Taking its title from Carlo Goldoni’s “Trilogy of Summer Retreat,” the Cypriot visual artist structures the exhibition as a three-act dramaturgical experience, exploring the concept of summer retreat, seasonal withdrawal and the invention of the tourist imaginary. The artist describes Platres as “a stage for an urban mythology,” commenting on the village’s transformation into a resort during the British colonial period and exploring how the concepts of “holiday,” “villégiature” and “paratherismos” carry different historical and cultural meanings.
